New arrival in 2015 : Thorold's deer ! ! Early March, the Parc Animalier d'Auvergne had the honor of welcoming a Thorold's deer, also known as white-lipped deer. The park is the very first one in France to show this specie, which benefits from an ESB (European studbook). Receiving this specie respects in every way the values and concept of the Parc Animalier d'Auvergne (conservation and world's submit), which remains the only park in France to show this specie.
Classified as vulnerable on the IUCN's red list of endangered species, the Thorold's deer comes from the Tibetan plateau. He is between 1,2 and 1,3 meters high and weighs between 125 and 204 kg. He is identifiable by the white marks above his lips, snout and throat. His ears, also covered in white hairs, are longer than those of other cervedae species.
It is very diffucult to see the Thorold's deer in his natural environment, which is the reason why he only has a few serious predators. His main threat comes from mankind. Men reduce increasingly their population through both hunting and the fragmentation of his natural habitat. By welcoming this specie, the Parc Animalier d'Auvergne hopes to show his public how serious the threats on the Thorold's deer are. |
