EEP and ESB

Two conservation and reproduction programs for endangered species

On the zoo data sheets, we indicate which species are involved in an EEP or an ESB. There are nearly 20 in the park!

EEP : what is it?

The European breeding and conservation programs for endangered species have a goal of encouraging, overseeing and giving advice in order to encourage the breeding of an endangered species. The programs seek to maintain the species’ natural characteristics with an objective of possibly reintroducing it into nature. Another option is to reinforce the wild population with animals raised in zoos.

On the European level, the EAZA is in charge of EEPs. One coordinator per species is in charge of all of this species’ animals in European zoos. Each year, recommendations are made concerning reproduction. This way transfers between zoos can take place. This will help prevent problems of inbreeding. It will also help keep the lines « pure, » prior to reintroduction into the natural environment.

ESB : what is it?

A European StudBook (ESB) is less intensive than an EEP program. It is the second level of the European breeding program for endangered species. The studbook guardian, who is responsible for an ESB for a particular species, collects all the information about births, deaths, and transfers in all of the EAZA zoos that have that species. This rich information allows the species population to be analyzed. The StudBook guardian, in collecting and analyzing all the information about the species for which he is responsible, can recommend that the species be handled as part of an EEP program, if he decides its necessary.
